HDCC BBQ at the Pond: Saturday 25th July

The club will be hosting a BBQ at the pond on Saturday 25th July.

All members are welcome as are family members.

We have also invited our friends from the HCA to join us on the day and we will be playing games on the pond instead of a usual session.

Please bring your own food/drink and disposable BBQ’s.

Canoe Polo Yorkshire Division 3

Yearsley Pool, York - 24th January 2009

Hull & District Scratch Team –
Will Rafton, Nathaniel Stead, Simeon Stead, Jessica To, Mark Wadsworth

Hull & District were asked if they would like to put together a scratch team for this tournament, due to the Leeds University Team not being able to attend. This was a great chance for some of our younger members to experience competitive polo matches and to also see what it was like to play together within a tournament concept rather than just attending training games.

I was asked if I would go along to accompany the team and to assist on the pitch if needed. So I arrived at the pool in York with some trepidation as yes I know that Div 3 is not exactly a difficult standard of polo, but would the players be up for it? Could we win some games? Would they be strong enough against mainly university students and adult paddlers?
Well our first slight problem was that only four players turned up so I was forced to play each game and as I cant even stop a beach ball!! It was going to be more of a sweeper’s role than a goalkeeper of any description, also I was injured (torn muscles in right forearm) so really should not have even been on the pitch at all, But needs must as they say!!

The players before we started did express some disbelief at the ‘size’ of some of the opposition!! So it was important to express the fact that yes they were all mostly 6ft but as regards paddling and polo ability they were no better than us and it was crucial to concentrate on playing hard rather than scared!!!

The game plan was to use Nathaniel or Will up front alongside Simeon and then Jessica with either Will or Nathaniel at the back, with myself attempting to cover up any mess ups we might have happening at any stage!! With Will and Nathaniel having more experience it was important to use these two as the main attacking and defending options with the other two covering and offering outlets for passes if and when we got the ball. So we were set for our first game and with my big gob screaming instructions and the rest of the team doing there roles we hoped to pull off some results.

Our first game was against Wharfe Ducks which turned out to be more of a youth team with the odd additional paddler so this was at least an easier less intimidating start for the team. After a comfortable 3-0 win for us it was definitely game on!!
Sheffield University was our second opponent which was slightly more worrying as they had been in Division 2 last season and from what I can remember were a promising outfit, who were now a year older and a year more experienced??
…………………..Well we need not have worried we won 3-1!!

Malton were our third team and they seemed well up for it!! So it turned out to be more of a difficult game, a definite end to end scrap. But young Simeon will always remember his great move through the middle of there defence and shot to put us in a great position!! 4-2 final score and things were looking good for a very successful night.
York University A Team was our final game, and by now all was going fine. Jessica in each game was working well tracking players and keeping people out, whilst Nathaniel and Will chased down balls and kept the pressure on. A resounding 5-0 win was a great outcome!!

So overall a very rewarding experience and morale boosting night which should give the players a much brighter outlook on what they can achieve.

So our first adventure at Division 3 with this team was a great introduction and hopefully next season this team can be put forward to compete at this level and from what I saw of them, and the support from their parents which is fantastic, they should do well.

The Mariners would like to thank Mark Wadsworth, Paul Dudley and Will Rafton for their help on Saturday (17/01/09) at the Regional Division 1 tournament in York. We were missing 4 of our 7 players and these guys agreed to step in to help us limit the damage on the night. They even helped us to win one of our matches and kept other matches to a more respectable score.
